Have Allergies? We can help. Let's talk!

Allergies Are A Common Condition

Allergies are among the most common chronic conditions worldwide. Allergy symptoms range from making you miserable to putting you at risk for life-threatening reactions.

According to the leading experts in allergy, an allergic reaction begins in the immune system. Our immune system protects us from invading organisms that can cause illness. If you have an allergy, your immune system mistakes an otherwise harmless substance as an invader. This substance is called an allergen. The immune system overreacts to the allergen by producing Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies. These antibodies travel to cells that release histamine and other chemicals, causing an allergic reaction.

Allergy Symptoms

An allergic reaction typically triggers symptoms in the nose, lungs, throat, sinuses, ears, lining of the stomach or on the skin. For some people, allergies can also trigger symptoms of asthma. In the most serious cases, a life-threatening reaction called anaphylaxis (an-a-fi-LAK-sis) can occur.

A number of different allergens are responsible for allergic reactions. The most common include:

  • Pollen
  • Dust
  • Food
  • Animal dander
  • Mold

Your Questions Answered!

Immunotherapy commonly referred to as "allergy shots"teaches the immune system not to overreact to innocent items in the environment. It begins with testing to identify your allergens. Then using pharmaceutical extracts of the molds, mites, dander, or pollens you're allergic to, we make a series of sterile dilutions. We work our way up from tiny amounts of the weakest dilution to full concentrates. This technique has been proven over 85 years, and it desensitizes your immune system to permanently erase your allergies. And the shots don't hurt.

Do You Need Allergy Relief?

Allergy shots are a form of treatment called immunotherapy. Each allergy shot contains a tiny amount of the specific substance or substances that trigger your allergic reactions.

Allergies are among the most common chronic conditions worldwide. Allergy symptoms range from making you feel miserable to long term illness. According to the leading experts in allergy, an allergic reaction begins in the immune system. Our immune system protects us from invading organisms that cause illness. If you have an allergy, your immune system mistakes an otherwise harmless substance for an invader. This substance is called an allergen.

A number of different allergens are responsible for allergic reactions. The most common include:

Allergy vaccines are a form of treatment called immunotherapy. Each allergy shot contains a tiny amount of the specific substances that trigger your allergic reactions. Your body responds to injected amounts of a particular allergen, given gradually increasing doses, thereby developing immunity or tolerance to the allergen. This involves receiving injections with increasing amounts of the allergen one to two times per week.

Allergy shots work like a vaccine. Your body responds to injected amounts of a particular allergen, given in gradually increasing doses, by developing immunity or tolerance to the allergen. This involves receiving injections with increasing amounts of the allergens about one to two times per week.

And allergy shots do not contain steroids, which can have adverse long-term side effects. Unlike allergy medicines, which act only to “cover up” allergic symptoms or prevent them temporarily, allergy shots fix the underlying problem of allergies.

Our policy is to have you wait in our clinic for 30 after your shot to make sure you don't get side effects like itchy eyes, shortness of breath, a runny nose, or a tight throat. If you get these symptoms after you leave, come back to our clinic. Redness, swelling, or irritation right around the site of the injection is normal.

Immunotherapy is generally safe and well tolerated, but like all medical treatment has some risk. Since immunotherapy uses natural extracts of the very things to which a person is allergic, it can cause allergic reactions. Most such reactions are localized but they can be generalized.

No, allergy shots are not known to be associated with weight gain. On the other hand, some allergy medications are. If you are taking antihistamines on a regular basis, they may be contributing to your weight gain, as some of them are known to increase appetite.

Most serious systemic reactions develop within 30 minutes of allergy shots. This is why we have you wait in our clinic for 30 minutes after your injections.

Systemic reactions are less common but potentially more serious. You may develop sneezing, nasal congestion or hives. In Speidel Allergy Clinic we test the strength of the dilution in order to avoid any unpleasant reactions.

You have to continue to get shots one or two times per week for several months. This is so that your immune system can build up a tolerance to the allergen over time. The process is called desensitization.

Some patients will notice an early improvement of symptoms within several weeks during the buildup phase, but it may take as long as 6 to 12 months on the maintenance dose to see a significant improvement. The effectiveness of immunotherapy is related to the strength of allergy vaccines and the length of treatment.

YES, YES and YES! Even Medicare pays for this therapy! Call Speidel Allergy Clinic in Poulsbo with your insurance information and we will check your benefits before your appointment.

You will be in Speidel Allergy Clinic for approximately 2 hours. Our doctors will use this time to go over your allergy symptoms, your history, and have you do a multi-prick test (MPT).

The MPT will test for over 70 different environmental allergies (grasses, molds, weeds etc). The test is done within 25 mins. Our doctors will go over the results with you and customize an immunotherapy plan with your specific allergies.  They may even have you do a food allergy test. That is done by sending your blood to an outside lab with results in about 4 weeks.

Before starting any treatment our doctors will answer all your questions. We will also check your insurance benefits to be sure everything is covered before your first visit.
